Water Purification Backpack

The project aimed to create a sustainable and reliable water purification backpack for outdoor enthusiasts, featuring improved weight distribution and a mobile app for tracking water quality. The design process involved refining comfort, functionality, and eco-friendly materials, resulting in a product that combines practicality and sustainability, with seamless integration between the backpack and app.

Design Process

The design process began with user research and the development of key personas to better understand the needs of outdoor users. I then explored initial concepts through sketches, focusing on comfort, functionality, and integrating a water purification system. Through testing and refinement, I optimized the backpack’s weight distribution with a bladder-style pouch and chose eco-friendly materials. The final design was paired with a companion mobile app to offer a practical and sustainable solution for outdoor adventures.

Personas

To guide the design of the backpack and companion app, I created two user personas based on common needs in outdoor travel. Alexa is a young, adventurous photographer seeking eco-friendly, lightweight gear, while Ethan is a sustainability-driven consultant who values durability and functionality. Their unique goals and frustrations helped shape key design decisions throughout the project.

Sketches

After defining the user needs through personas, I began sketching ideas for both the backpack and its companion app. These early sketches helped explore layout, usability, and integration between the physical product and digital experience. The concepts focused on easy water tracking, minimal user input, and a clean interface aligned with outdoor use.

The Final Design

The goal of this project was to create a product from scratch that would benefit outdoor enthusiasts by providing a sustainable and reliable solution for accessing clean water on the go. The project focused on designing a durable water purification backpack that enhances comfort through better weight distribution and integrates a mobile app for tracking water quality. By addressing the needs of eco-conscious adventurers, the project aimed to offer a practical, high-performance product that supports a sustainable lifestyle while ensuring reliability and convenience for users.

Backpack and Water Pouch Design

This design integrates a sleek and lightweight backpack with a removable water pouch. The backpack is tailored for hikers and outdoor enthusiasts, featuring an ergonomic shape for comfort and durability. The water pouch includes an advanced filtration system, allowing users to purify water on the go. Its design ensures even weight distribution, enhancing portability while maintaining functionality. This setup aligns with sustainable and practical needs, providing clean water without relying on single-use plastic bottles.

Card:

This card accompanies the Water Purification Backpack and serves as a quick and convenient way to connect users to the companion mobile app. Equipped with an NFC tag, users can simply scan the card to link their backpack and water pouch to the app instantly. Also, they can use the registration code on the card for manual entry. This dual functionality ensures accessibility for all users, enhancing their experience by providing seamless integration with the app for tracking, maintenance, and support.

App:

This app for the Water Purification Backpack offers a user-friendly design with features like secure registration, real-time purification tracking, and personalized notifications. Its clean blue-and-white interface ensures smooth navigation, aligning with eco-conscious and reliable functionality for outdoor users.
